Sierra Madre : Suspect Held in Mail Thefts
A 41-year-old Glendora resident pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Pasadena Municipal Court to burglary charges stemming from three midnight thefts of mail from the Sierra Madre post office.
Stephen Lumary, 41, a furniture salesman in Glendale, faces a preliminary hearing Sept. 13 in Pasadena. Lumary was arrested Saturday at 11:50 p.m. outside the post office on Baldwin Avenue.
Lumary is also a suspect in mail thefts at post offices in West Covina, Whittier, South El Monte, North Hollywood, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta and Montrose, police said.
Mail was stolen from the Sierra Madre post office seven times since July 10, said Sierra Madre Police Detective John Cordischi. The thief walked into the lobby, which is open 24 hours, and pried open mail boxes to retrieve letters containing credit cards.
Cordischi said he staked out the office and arrested Lumary as the suspect left the post office carrying a small flashlight, screwdriver and letters not addressed to him.
Police are still looking for an accomplice who sped away in a 1977 white, Ford Thunderbird, California license plate 3DKW314, Cordischi said.
