CAMARILLO : Shetland Pony Is Taken From Pen

Call it the Case of the Purloined Pony.

Camarillo police are scratching their heads over where to begin looking for a 26-year-old Shetland pony that was kidnaped from its pen sometime Tuesday morning.

“It’s the first Shetland pony that I’ve had stolen around here,” Sgt. Keith Lazz said. “When the price of horse meat was going through the roof, you used to hear about it, but that was a long time ago.”

Roberta Denny said she bought Noel for $100 in the late 1960s.

“My husband went out to feed him about 6:30 in the morning and he was gone,” she said of the longtime family pet. “They had moved the fence and lifted it just enough to get him out.

“He’s not a frisky young thing,” she said. “You can’t ride him any more. He just stands around and eats. If he was a thoroughbred, it would be different.”

The Shetland, valued at $400 on the police report, stands 50 inches tall, weighs 350 to 400 pounds and has brown front legs and white rear legs, Denny told investigators.

“You can’t put a price on something like that,” she said. “We’ve had him so long, he has much more sentimental value. It’s part of your life.”
