OXNARD : English Teacher Wins District Distinction

Billie Covert, chairwoman of the English department at Hueneme High, was named Teacher of the Year by the Oxnard Union High School District on Thursday.

Covert, 53, has been an English teacher for more than 20 years and is starting her ninth year in the district.

Nominated by her peers at Hueneme High, Covert and the other five candidates had to write answers to a series of questions, which were judged by a district committee.

In her answers, Covert said she enjoys using humor in the classroom and considers herself the students’ friendly guide on their journey through English literature.

“We have a blast,” said Covert, who teaches college prep English to seniors.

Although some educators are nostalgic for the good old days, Covert doesn’t think students are any different than they’ve ever been.

“Kids are always kids,” she said. “They may dress differently, but they’re still the same kids with the same problems.”
