THE MOST SOUTHERN PLACE ON EARTH: The Mississipi Delta and the Roots of Regional Identity by James C. Cobb (Oxford University Press). A scholarly and comprehensive history of the Mississippi Delta that explores the South’s socioeconomic and cultural characteristics within the context of “its interaction with rather than its isolation from” the larger national and global setting. The dense evidence of meticulous research is woven gracefully into a lively narrative.
The Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalists and winners are selected in each category by an independent panel of judges. Winners will be announced in the Book Review issue of October 31.
