Wary of repeating the fan rampage that occurred when it did an in-store appearance at the Beverly Hills Wherehouse record store in 1990, Depeche Mode is planning a less personal meet-and-greet tied to its upcoming U.S. tour. The band will hold a computer network fan forum sometime during the week of Sept. 20. Fans hooked up to the America On-Line service will be able to type in questions and have them answered by band members. . . .

Prince is actually using that name and not the symbol (pronounced like the sound of one ego clapping) on his new single “Pink Cashmere,” the first track released from the upcoming hits package. The official reason for reviving the original moniker is that he recorded the song before changing his name. . . .

Among the songs on the upcoming Lemonheads album, “Come On Feel the Lemonheads,” are “Big Gay Heart,” a country-ish, anti-gay-bashing song featuring ex-Flying Burrito Brother Sneeky Pete Kleinow on pedal steel, and “Rick James’ Style,” a song about struggles with sobriety featuring guest cameos by James and Juliana Hatfield. Head Lemon Evan Dando is holed up in an L.A. studio finishing the album, which is due in October. . . .

Cowboy Junkies have recorded a version of Dinosaur Jr.’s song “The Past” for their next album, titled “Pale Sun Crescent Moon” and due in January. . . . Dinosaur leader J Mascis has produced the major-label debut by Seattle band Tad, titled “Inhaler” and due Oct. 12. Tad plays the Hollywood Auditorium on Friday and is said to be up for the West Coast opening slot on Nirvana’s upcoming tour. . . . King Missile (of “Detachable Penis” fame) is in pre-production for its next album. . . .

“Married . . . With Children” star Katey Sagal is finishing her debut album for Virgin. She’s co-written nine of the 12 songs recorded so far, with two featuring backing vocals by the group Jellyfish. The album’s due next March. . . . The latest rocker planning a children’s album is the Who’s Roger Daltrey, whose “The Man in the Moon Takes a Night Off” will be released by BMG/Kids Zoom. Daltrey has also signed a deal with independent Continuum Records, which is planning both studio and live releases from the rock stallion next year.
