The usually tranquil Fort MacArthur parade ground will become the site Saturday for volleyball matches, a concert, historical re-enactments and space technology displays, during the Los Angeles Air Force Base open house.

The daylong event is being organized by the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, the main occupant of the base, which is in El Sequndo. Among the highlights wll be the first round of the Space and Missile Systems Center Volleyball Open tournament, a two-on-two challenge. The first round will be played on grass at the open house, and the second will take place on sand Sept. 21, in Manhattan Beach.

For aerospace buffs, the space and missile center will display technology with such easy-to-grasp names as Transportable Space Test & Evaluation Resource (a mobile unit used to check space vehicles before and after launching.)

Entertainment, meanwhile, will be provided by the 15th Air Force “Band of the Golden West,”a USO troupe and other groups.

Historical re-enactments-complete with actors using period uniforms and equipment-are also planned, featuring encampments as they would have appeared during different stages in Fort MacArthur’s history. The fort contains the site of the oldest Spanish development in San Pedro, a storehouse for animal hides that was built about 1790.

Says Col. Quentin Thomas, the base’s support group commander: “We look forward to showing (the base’s) manly historical attractions to everyone.”
