HUNTINGTON BEACH : Literacy Program Gets $35,000 Grant
The city’s Library Adult Literacy Program has received a $35,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue for another year.
The grant, coupled with expected matching grants from the California State Library, will ensure that the program continues to help people learn to read, write and speak through next September, officials said.
About 20 to 300 residents are enrolled in the program, which offers one-on-one tutoring in addition to instruction at a computer lab at the Huntington Beach Central Library.
This will be the eighth consecutive year that the program will receive federal money under the Library Services & Construction Act. Federal officials have warned that the funding is expected to be discontinued next year, according to Jan Halvorsen, library services manager.
Local officials expect to hold fund-raising events to keep the program going in following years, she said.
There is a waiting list to enroll in the program, and tutors are urgently needed, Halvorsen said.
