Joe Montana threw with only slight discomfort in his injured right wrist, but the Kansas City Chiefs kept his status for Sunday’s game at Houston in doubt. “I thought he was fine,” Coach Marty Schottenheimer said after Montana threw about 70 passes. “We’ll make a decision Sunday.”

If Montana does not start, the Chiefs will go with Dave Krieg, who started every game in 1992. Montana, who hurt the wrist last Sunday, said he was tentative when he started to throw Friday. “Once I got past that, I felt a lot better,” he said. “It took me a couple of throws. After that, I felt pretty good.”

Strong safety Brett Maxie of the New Orleans Saints is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee. Maxie, a nine-year veteran who had reconstructive surgery on his left knee for the same injury in November, will also have surgery on his right knee. He injured his knee when he collided with running back Derrick Ned Thursday during pass drills. Keith Taylor will replace Maxie.
