Preview ’93 : Cable’s Connections : A & E AND DISCOVERY GO TO THE ARCHIVES; USA STALKS CRIME; BET GOES CARIBBEAN

This fall, cable is serving up an array of new documentary series, arts programming, reality-based series, game shows, informational series and even a Western set in Australia.

Following are new shows and series coming to cable and their time slots and premiere dates. Cable subscribers should note that not all systems carry all the cable channels listed.

A & E

“Civil War Journal”: Danny Glover hosts a new weekly historical series featuring archival material, photographs and diaries. Wednesdays at 5 and 9 p.m. Already premiered .

“Ancient Mysteries”: Series explores the history, myths and stories that have intrigued the world throughout the ages. Fridays at 7 and 1 p.m. Already premiered .

“The Story of Dogs”: A six-part look at man’s best friend. Dec. 5 at 5 and 9 p.m.

Untitled Music Series: One-hour music video series devoted to Caribbean-style music. Saturdays at 5:30 and 11 p.m. Sept. 25 .

COMEDY CENTRAL

“Drive-in Reviews”: Chicago radio personalities Julian Kilman and Tony Fitzpatrick host a new series which takes a humorous look at the most violent movies available on home video. Late October.

THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL

“Magical Worlds”: Series examines native peoples and tribal cultures for whom magic survives as a part of their daily lives, Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 28.

“Wings of the Red Star”: Series profiles the aviation achievements of the former Soviet Union during the period beginning with World War I and continuing through to the changes of the last few years. The series mixes archival footage with present-day film. Wednesdays at 9 p.m. Sept. 29 .

“Pacifica: Tales From the South Seas”: Series explores the islands of the South Pacific, where myth and magic merge. Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 30 .

“Movie Magic”: Exploration of movie special effects; each episode focuses on a single effect. Thursdays at 9 p.m. Sept. 30.

“Fields of Armor”: The greatest tank battles of the 20th Century are relived through the eyes of those who fought them. Fridays at 9 p.m. Oct. 1 .

E! ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION

“F.Y.E!”: Series looks at the entertainment industry’s most talked about people, places, events and trends of the week. Oct. 2 at 3 p.m.

“The Gossip Show”: Weekly series devoted to providing the latest celebrity news and industry gossip. Sept . 27 at 4:30 p.m.

“Pure Soap”: Soap opera highlight show that features updates on plot twists in daytime serials. Sept. at 4:30 p.m.

FAMILY CHANNEL

“Snowy River: The McGregor Saga”: Andrew Clarke, Wendy Hughes and Joshua Lucas star in a romantic-adventure series set in Australia in the late 1800s. Earl Hamner (“The Waltons”) is one of the executive producers. Sundays at 9 p.m.; Saturdays at 6 p.m. Already premiered.

“Desperate Passage”: Documentary series about young criminals in rehabilitation. Oct. 16, Nov. 6 and Dec. 18 at 9 p.m.

THE LEARNING CHANNEL

“Romantic Escapes”: Series profiles the components for a romantic holiday. Mondays at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 .

“Death by Chocolate”: Chef and cookbook author Marcel Desaulniers whips up decadent chocolate desserts. Mondays at 5 and 8 p.m; Saturdays at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sept. 27 .

“The Home Pro”: Projects for the handy person in the family. Tuesdays at 6 and 9 p.m.; Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sept. 28 .

“Great Castles of Europe”: The 13-part series features some of the best-known and most beautiful palaces on the Continent. Saturdays at 5 and 9 p.m.; Sundays at 8:30 a.m., 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Oct. 2 .

MTV

“Trashed”: Game show pits two teams of roommates against each other; contestants gamble their most prized belongings to win prizes. The losers’ property is destroyed. Premieres in October .

THE NASHVILLE NETWORK

“Dance Line”: Former Miss Texas and professional dancer Jo Thompson hosts a magazine-format series examining the styles, sounds and moves of today’s country music dance scene. Weekdays at 4 p.m. Sept. 27 .

“Country News”: Entertainment news report. Weekdays at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 27 .

“Music City Tonight”: Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase host a live weeknight series featuring the best in country music entertainment. Weeknights at 6. Oct. 18.

TBS

“The Heart of Healing”: Jane (“Dr. Quinn”) Seymour hosts a six-part documentary series examining successful examples of psychological and spiritual techniques for treating serious illness and promoting well-being. Oct. 26-28 at 5:05 p.m. and 9:05 p.m.

“The Untold West”: Three-part documentary series that attempts to shatter the myths of the Old West and uncover the true stories behind the legends. Dec. 13-15 at 5:05 p.m.

USA

“Case Closed”: Stacy Keach hosts a reality-based series that comes to the defense of people who have been stalked, ripped off or robbed. If victims can’t get help from local authorities, they can contact the “Case Closed” 1-800 number and the producers will hire a private investigator. Sundays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. Premieres Saturday.

“Duckman”: Adult animated comedy series from the animators of “The Simpsons” and “Rugrats,” about a reformed chain smoker with a propensity for tirades against an imperfect world. Premieres early ’94.

VH-1

“Fools for Love”: Jon Brandeis and Caroline Rhea host a weekly series showcasing the trials and tribulations of relationships and dating through the eyes and mouths of comedians. Fridays at 8 p.m. Already premiered .
