Emerson Fittipaldi kept the battle for the Indy car championship alive with a victory in the Pioneer Electronics 200 Sunday at Lexington, Ohio.

Mansell, who went into the 199.3-mile, 89-lap race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with a 34-point lead over Fittipaldi and a 47-point lead over Tracy, started from the pole and had a good chance to wrap up the championship with two races remaining.

But he and Tracy banged together moments after the start. Then Mansell’s Lola-Ford Cosworth slowed and Arie Luyendyk clipped Mansell’s right-front end as he drove past, which led to an early pit stop, putting the 1992 Formula One champion two laps down. Mansell finished 12th.

Tracy was nearly 15 1/2 seconds ahead of Fittipaldi on lap 22 when he slid off the course and slammed into a wall, ending his racing day. Tracy was not injured.

Fittipaldi led the rest of the way.

Damon Hill came from behind in his Williams-Renault to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Italy.

With 58 championship points and three Grand Prix races remaining, Hill has a chance to overtake French teammate Alain Prost for the drivers’ title. Prost has 81 points. Each victory is worth 10 points, second worth six.
