Beschen, Ward Advance in Surfbout
Gavin Beschen and Chris Ward, both of San Clemente, advanced to the main event of the Body Glove Surfbout VI Wednesday in six-to eight-foot surf at Lower Trestles near Camp Pendleton.
The event is the ninth stop on the $200,000 1993 Bud Surf Tour.
The trials concluded Wednesday; the main event begins today.
Beschen, the 17-year-old brother of 1992 Bud Tour champion Shane Beschen, advanced through the final round of the trials by winning his heat.
Ward, 14, was second in his heat in the second round but won his third-round heat to advance.
The top-seeded surfers, including Shane Beschen and Richie Collins, will compete in the fifth round today and the sixth round early Friday. The bodyboard and longboard competition also starts Friday.
The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be on Sunday.
