Boy Gets Ball the Hard Way at First Game

A 10-year-old Nashua boy’s first trip to Boston’s Fenway Park ended before the game started when he was struck by a ball and knocked unconscious.

Adam Porter was in the stands along the third base line trying to get autographs Monday night when a ball thrown by Baltimore Oriole first baseman David Segui hit him above the right eye.

When Adam regained consciousness a minute later, he was taken to Boston Children’s Hospital, where he spent several hours being treated for a concussion.

Tricia Porter said she watched from her seat as her son, 7-year-old daughter and husband Kevin walked down near the field. Segui was playing catch, and one of his throws sailed high and hit Adam.

Porter said she rushed to help her son, only to be shoved by an adult trying to grab the loose ball. Then, another man who identified himself as a lawyer produced a business card.

“He tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘Call me, I saw everything,’ ” she said. “I just tossed his card away.”

Segui gave Adam his batting gloves and signed the ball, which another fan had recovered.

“I wanted to get a ball, but I did it the hard way,” Kevin said.
