BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Strawberry May Play Games in Arizona

Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, spoke to Darryl Strawberry Thursday morning about going to the Arizona Instructional League and said that Strawberry may be reporting there soon. Games begin next week.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said that a decision on whether to file spousal abuse charges against Strawberry should be made in the next couple of days.

Strawberry has not worked out with the team or been at Dodger Stadium since he was arrested Sept. 4 for allegedly abusing his girlfriend. He has, though, continued to rehabilitate his surgically repaired back at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Inglewood.

The Dodgers have strongly hinted that they will sever ties with Strawberry if he is convicted of the charge. But Strawberry’s girlfriend, who has requested anonymity, did not press charges, which handed the decision to the district attorney.

Claire--who has tired of Strawberry’s off-the-field exploits--said the impending decision by the district attorney does not stop the club from helping Strawberry to recover physically.

“One doesn’t stop the other from happening,” Claire said. “We have two issues here; one is Darryl’s health and the other is conduct. We are not waiting for the decision to continue with Darryl’s progress. His overall care is something that we will continue to provide--we have that obligation.”
