No. 5 Florida Only No. 3 in State

The Florida Gators are No. 5 in the nation and No. 3 in their own state.

The Gators rose four spots in the Associated Press college football poll after beating Tennessee, 41-34, but still trail No. 1 Florida State and No. 3 Miami.

Florida State remained on top after beating North Carolina, 33-7. The Seminoles received 57 first-place votes and 1,544 points from a nationwide panel of writers and broadcasters.

The other five first-place votes went to No. 2 Alabama, which beat Arkansas, 43-3. The Crimson Tide received two more first-place votes than in the previous week.

Miami stayed No. 3 with a 21-2 victory over Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame held onto the No. 4 spot after defeating Michigan State, 36-14.

Nebraska moved up two notches to No. 6 after edging UCLA, 14-13, and Ohio State jumped four places to No. 7 after beating Pittsburgh, 63-28.

Idle Michigan rose two spots to No. 8, Penn State jumped five spots to No. 9 by beating Iowa, 31-0, and idle Oklahoma climbed two notches to No. 10.

Louisville and Auburn broke into the top 25. Boston College and Arizona State fell out. Louisville beat Arizona State, 35-17, Auburn defeated Louisiana State, 34-10, and Boston College lost to Northwestern, 22-21.

It is Louisville’s first ranking since the Cardinals finished 14th after the 1990 season. Auburn’s last appearance in the Top 25 was midway through the 1991 season.

Auto Racing

One was killed and at least 21 were injured when a race car crashed into a pit area at Stockton 99 Speedway.

Driver Ben Twisselman hit a retaining wall after apparently losing control coming out of a turn during the Saturday night race, according to officials. His car skidded over a chain-link safety fence and landed in a pit area, witnesses said.

Twisselman was not injured.

Track officials identified the victim as Modesto resident Rene Bourgois, 34, a member of driver Mike David’s pit crew. The injured were all drivers or pit-crew members.

Wrestling

Alexander Karelin of Russia extended one of the longest winning streaks in sports to 162 as he won the super-heavyweight final in the World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships at Stockholm.

The United States had only two wrestlers in the top 10. James Johnson of Phoenix earlier finished fifth at 220 pounds and Dennis Hall of Stevens Point, Wis., took ninth at 125.5 pounds.

Miscellany

Japan’s Izumi Maki broke a 10-year-old world record by winning the women’s 20,000-meter run at Amagaski, Japan, in 1 hour 6 minutes 48.8 seconds.

Lucketz Swartbooi of Namibia won the $30,000 Philadelphia Distance Run, covering the half-marathon course in 1:01:26.

Goalie Guy Hebert has agreed to a three-year contract with the Mighty Ducks. Hebert is competing with Ron Tugnutt in camp to become the Ducks’ No. 1 goalie.

Mexico’s Ricardo Lopez stopped challenger Toto Por Pongsawang of Thailand in the 11th round at Bangkok to retain the World Boxing Council straw-weight crown.

Top-ranked Stanford beat No. 3 USC, 9-4, to win a water polo tournament at the USC McDonald’s Swim Center.

Shane Beschen won his second consecutive pro surfing event, off San Clemente.

Ted Turner, Dennis Conner and Bill Koch were inducted as charter members of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.
