Proposition 174, the school voucher initiative on the Nov. 2 statewide ballot, will be discussed during a forum Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Alicante hotel in Garden Grove.

Saddleback Valley Unified School District Trustee Frank Ury and Wilbert L. Smith, a former board member of the Pasadena Unified School District, will speak in favor of the proposition. Mike Kilbourn, director of legislative services for the Orange County Department of Education, and Capistrano Unified School District Supt. James A. Fleming will speak against it.

Each speaker will talk for 10 minutes and then answer questions from the audience.

The forum is being sponsored by the Education Committee of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is inviting the public to attend.

“We’re simply providing the voters with some information on Prop. 174 because it is a very confusing and very emotional issue,” said Bruce Brown, chamber spokesman.

The forum begins at 7:30 p.m. and $2.50 admission will be charged to cover the cost of the room and coffee.
