THOUSAND OAKS : 2,000 Residents Turn In Toxins

More than 2,000 Thousand Oaks residents turned in thousands of gallons of toxic materials in last weekend’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Program, city officials said.

The common household hazardous wastes collected included 1,700 gallons of motor oil, 4,500 gallons of paint and 250 barrels of assorted poisons and other chemicals, officials said.

“It was very successful and we now intend to do this on a regular basis,” said Carolyn Greene, the city’s solid waste planner.

In addition, several dozen people took advantage of a new reuse area where items such as paint, unopened jugs of motor oil and garden products were given away, officials said.

A new appointment system was credited with keeping lines down and limiting the average length of stay for each participant to about eight minutes, said Greene.

A similar event was held in June. The city plans to offer drop-off dates each spring and fall, she said. The city spent $100,000 on the event, largely for the cost of hiring a hazardous waste disposal company to coordinate the drop-off and dispose of the products, she said.
