GOLF : Humenik (66) Shares Lead With Glasson

Ed Humenik used a roller-coaster opening round of five-under-par 66 Thursday to match Bill Glasson for the lead after the weather-shortened opening round of the B.C. Open.

Brian Claar and Mark Lye, who played in the same threesome, were one stroke behind the leaders. Perry Moss also was at four under through 14 holes when play on the par-71, 6,966-yard En-Joie Golf Club course was halted by heavy rain at 4:45 p.m.

Sixteen other threesomes were unable to finish the round and will come back early today to complete play before the second round starts.

Six golfers completed the round at 68. Four others, including 1990 winner Nolan Henke, were still on the course at three under.

Defending champion John Daly, who coasted to a six-stroke victory last year, shot a 71.

“I drove the ball real well, and I hit a lot of real ugly irons,” said Humenik, whose best PGA Tour finish was a tie for fourth in the 1992 Southern Open. “But I happened to make a few putts out there, and that helps.”

Said Glasson, who won this tournament in 1988 but is looking for his first victory this year: “Physically, it was a pretty easy round. I got through the tough holes. I had a lot of opportunities.”
