Police continued searching Friday for the driver of a car that struck and killed a 54-year-old man as he was crossing the street Thursday night, then sped away.
Authorities said Lazaro Suarez of Anaheim was illegally crossing North Anaheim Boulevard about 8 p.m. when he was hit by a dark-colored car, possibly a Ford or a Mercury, and was left lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, said Anaheim police traffic investigator Chuck O’Connor.
The driver of the car, an unidentified male, was traveling northbound at about 40 m.p.h. when the accident occurred.
The driver “definitely knew he hit someone,” O’Connor said. “He was going within the speed limit, but he did not stop after the accident. In fact, witnesses said he accelerated out of the area.”
Anyone with information about the identity of the driver is asked to call the traffic bureau of the Anaheim Police Department, at (714) 254-1532 or (714) 254-1835.
