TENNIS ROUNDUP : U.S. Sweeps the Bahamas on Gorman’s Final Day

Tom Gorman’s final coaching duties as U.S. Davis Cup captain were anticlimactic Sunday as the Americans completed a 5-0 victory over the Bahamas in a qualifying round at Charlotte, N.C.

The United States got two victories at Olde Providence Racquet Club for the sweep. Mal Washington defeated Roger Smith, 6-1, 6-2, in the last of the five matches. Mark Knowles withdrew from the opening match against Andre Agassi because of physical problems, although Agassi said earlier that he did not want to wait around Sunday. Instead, Richey Reneberg defeated John Farrington, 6-1, 6-4.

With Gorman’s departure, Howard Frazer, president of the United States Tennis Assn., announced that he hopes to find a replacement by next month. Pairings for the 16-nation world group will be announced Oct. 19 in London.

Those believed to be considered are John McEnroe, Stan Smith, Brad Gilbert and Tom Gullickson.

Australia and Germany completed 5-0 semifinal victories en route to their Davis Cup championship meeting in December. Australia defeated India without losing a set on the grass court at Chandigarh. Wally Masur defeated India’s Leander Paes, 6-4, 6-2, and Jason Stoltenberg downed Zeeshan Ali, 6-3, 6-3.

Germany, which will play host to the final Dec. 3-5, got victories from Michael Stich and Marc Goellner against Sweden on the indoor clay court at Borlange. Stich defeated Stefan Edberg, 6-1, 6-1, for his third victory in three days and Goellner defeated Henrik Holm, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

In a qualifying match at Copenhagen, Goran Prpic of Croatia fell and injured his left knee in the fourth set of the decisive singles match against Frederik Fetterlein as Denmark won, 3-2.

Prpic was carried off the court with Fetterlein leading, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 6-5 (30-15).
