Bill Swift became the San Francisco Giants’ second 20-game winner and Barry Bonds hit his fourth home run in three games as the Giants beat the San Diego Padres, 5-2, Sunday to stay 1 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the National League West.

With Swift (20-8) and John Burkett (20-7), the Giants became the first team to have two 20-game winners since Bob Welch and Dave Stewart accomplished the feat for the 1990 Oakland Athletics.

Swift gave up three hits in eight innings, retiring the last 12. He struck out two and walked one.

The game didn’t start auspiciously for the right-hander, who hit the first batter. One out later, Billy Bean doubled to score Jarvis Brown, ending Swift’s 19-inning scoreless streak.

“I was actually nervous,” Swift said. “You’re sitting in the clubhouse three hours before the game and thinking about it. I went out in the first inning and gave up a run and thought, ‘Aw, here we go.’ ”

But in the fourth, Bonds put the Giants ahead, 2-1, with his league-leading 44th home run after starter Doug Brocail (3-13) walked Matt Williams.
