Prost Takes Second to Win Formula One Title

Alain Prost of France won his fourth world Formula One driving title Sunday with a second-place finish at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril. Michael Schumacher of Germany won the race, but Prost gained six points to take an insurmountable lead over Williams-Renault teammate Damon Hill of Britain to clinch the title with two races remaining.

Prost, who said he would retire at the end of the season, lost by less than a second to Schumacher, who averaged 124.118 m.p.h. in earning his second career Grand Prix victory.

Ernie Irvan’s dominating victory in the Goody’s 500 at Martinsville, Va., was overshadowed by the tightening of the Winston Cup championship race between leader Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace.

Wallace, who came into the 500-lap race at Martinsville Speedway with two consecutive victories and a 181-point deficit in the title chase, was the only driver to challenge Irvan.

Earnhardt finished 29th because of engine problems and his lead over Wallace dropped to 82 points with five races remaining. . . . Brazil’s Alexandre Barros won the 500cc title of the Madrid Grand Prix motorcycle race, and American Kevin Schwantz won the world championship.

College Football

West Virginia broke into the Top 25, while Stanford dropped out of the Associated Press college football poll after its second loss. West Virginia (3-0) was ranked 25th after beating Missouri, 35-3. Stanford (2-2), 17th last week, fell out of the poll after losing to UCLA, 28-25.

Backup quarterback Ivin Jasper rushed for four touchdowns as Hawaii defeated Texas El Paso, 52-0, in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday night.

Hockey

Doug Gilmour of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been suspended for one exhibition game and fined $500 for head-butting Enrico Ciccone of the Washington Capitals last week.

Erin Whitten, the second woman to play in a professional hockey game, stopped 10 of 12 shots for the Adirondack Red Wings in an American Hockey League exhibition at Glens Falls, N.Y.

Miscellany

Cuba defeated the United States, 17-16, 11-15, 15-7, 15-13, at New Orleans to earn a berth in the 1994 World Volleyball Championships. The United States can qualify for the world championships by winning a tournament in Paris in November.

Zambia, still recovering from a plane crash that killed 18 of its players on April 28, routed Senegal, 4-0, at Lusaka, Zambia, and moved within one point of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup.

Thailand’s Ratanaphon Sor Vorapin stopped Dominggus Siwalette of Indonesia in the fourth round to retain the International Boxing Federation mini-flyweight title at Bangkok. . . . Former IBF bantamweight champion Rolando Bohol of the Philippines was arrested on a rape charge moments after winning a non-title bout by decision in Manila, police said.

Marleve Mainaky of Indonesia, ranked fifth in the world, won the men’s singles at the Yonex U.S. Open Badminton championships at Loyola Marymount, and Lim Xiao Qing of Sweden, ranked eighth in the world, won the women’s title. No. 2-ranked Jon Holst-Christensen and Thomas Lund of Denmark won the men’s doubles title and top-ranked So Young Chung and Young Ah Gil of Korea won the women’s title.
