A gay and lesbian rights group is calling for Long Beach City Councilman Douglas S. Drummond to resign because of statements he made at a recent forum.
At the forum, Drummond said that he was not worried about gay activity because thousands of homosexuals are dying of AIDS and because gays and lesbians don’t reproduce. He also said he supported Cuba’s policy of quarantining people with the disease. Drummond said it is “pitiful” that gays and lesbians are allowed to adopt children.
The predominantly homosexual Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club scheduled a press conference at City Hall today to urge Drummond to resign. Paul Self, president of the organization, said the councilman’s comments reflect “a depth of bigotry that’s frightening and incomprehensible. That mentality . . . shouldn’t be something an elected official in Long Beach should have.”
Drummond is on hunting vacation in Wyoming with City Manager James C. Hankla and was unavailable for comment, aide Steven J. Eliakedis said.
