A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.
CITY COUNCIL
TREE PLANTING: Approved the closure of the east side of Marvin Avenue between Washington Boulevard and Ballona Creek from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday for tree planting. Members of the Marvin/Curson/Carmona Avenues Neighborhood Watch Group will plant the trees with the help of The TreePeople, a private nonprofit organization that promotes urban forestry.
WALK OF FAME: Approved the appointment of Bill Garcia as a member of the Hollywood Historical Trust. The trust’s duties includes overseeing the maintenance of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Garcia is a field deputy for City Councilman John Ferraro.
APPOINTMENT: Approved Los Angeles school board member Barbara Boudreaux as a member of the board of the Los Angeles Convention Center Commission. Boudreaux lives in the West Adams area.
HOW THEY VOTED
How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.
HARVEST MOON: Approved a proposal by Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky to provide five methane-powered city buses to the TreePeople Harvest Moon Dinner on Oct. 9. This is a fund-raising event to support programs for the TreePeople. The buses will provide shuttle service between Coldwater Canyon Park, the site of the dinner, and a remote parking lot. The Southern California Gas Co. is paying for the shuttle service. PASSED: 13-0.
VOTING YES: Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky.
ABSENT: Marvin Braude.
SETTLEMENT: Approved spending $620,051 to settle a lawsuit brought by a motorist who was seriously injured in a July, 1990, traffic accident when she failed to stop for a stop sign at Waring Avenue and Crescent Heights Boulevard and her automobile was hit by another vehicle. The injured motorist contended that the sign was obstructed by a city tree. PASSED: 13-0.
VOTING YES: Ferraro, Galanter, Goldberg, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky.
ABSENT: Braude.
MINORITY BUSINESSES: Approved an application requesting $135,000 from the federal government to start a Minority Business Opportunity Committee Program. The program’s aim is to increase opportunities for minority businesses, in part by providing greater access to financing, management, contracts and markets. PASSED: 13-0.
VOTING YES: Ferraro, Galanter, Goldberg, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky.
ABSENT: Braude.
