Jacco Eltingh of the Netherlands pulled off a major surprise, upsetting Jim Courier in the second round of the Malaysia Salem Open at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Unseeded Eltingh used his aggressive and attacking style to eliminate the world’s second-ranked player, 6-4, 6-3.
Eltingh will play a quarterfinal match against seventh-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden, who defeated Kenny Thorne, 6-2, 6-4.
Eighth-seeded Michael Chang survived a grueling match against Robbie Weiss, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. *
Second-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sicilian Open at Palermo by defeating Renzo Furlan of Italy, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Alex Colletja of Spain defeated fifth-seeded countryman, Javier Sanchez, 6-1, 6-2.
Sanchez’s brother, Emilio, was upset in the first round by Federico Sanchez, another Spaniard, who advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic.
