SPORTSCOPE : Loyola Volleyball Team Opens WCC Play at Home

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will open West Coast Conference play tonight at 7 against Gonzaga (4-8) at Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions will play host to Portland (3-12) in a WCC match at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Loyola, ranked 24th nationally, is 10-4 after Tuesday’s road loss to 12th-ranked UC Santa Barbara.

The Lions are led by freshman outside hitter Suzanne Radcliffe, who has 135 kills and 23 aces. Sophomore middle blocker Mardell Wrensch and freshman outside hitter Kim Blankinship each have 134 kills, and Blankinship, a graduate of Torrance High, leads the team with 132 digs.

Loyola leads the WCC in team kills (15.82 a game), aces (2.48) and assists (14.34).

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team will open California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play at Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Toros (6-3) slipped from sixth to seventh in the NCAA Division II rankings after last week’s 3-2 loss to 17th-ranked Northern Colorado.

Senior forward Teresa Bateman (Torrance High, El Camino College) and sophomore forward Gwen Nakashima (Torrance High) are tied for the conference lead in scoring with 18 points each.

The Slam-N-Jam development basketball league will conduct tryouts for the 1993-94 season from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 9, 16 and 23 at Victoria Regional Park in Carson.

Players from kindergarten through ninth grade are eligible to participate. Team practice will begin on Nov. 15 and league play on Dec. 11. Each player will receive a uniform and be instructed on fundamentals. (213) 532-0622.

The city of Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a 3-K and 5-K run at 8 a.m. Sunday.

There is no entry fee for the race, which starts at the Century Freeway. Medals will be awarded through third place in all male and female categories and T-shirts will go to the first 400 registrants.
