Four Harbor College football players have been suspended indefinitely from school in the aftermath of a brawl between Harbor and Pierce players after their game Saturday.

Gary Wood, public information officer at Harbor, said the school plans to reinstate its football program Monday. The program was suspended this week while an investigation into the incident was conducted.

The Seahawks will forfeit the game scheduled for Saturday against West L.A.

“We have also reinforced the team rules and school rules to the players,” Wood said.

Also on Thursday, investigator Rick Brown of the Los Angeles Police Harbor Division said that the department will ask the district attorney today to file misdemeanor charges of battery against several participants in the melee.

Brown said police investigators have been watching videotapes they received from various sources, including the schools and fans. He did not discount the possibility of even more charges being filed next week.

“There are so many people involved,” Brown said. “We still have a couple of people that we’re investigating.”

At least one person already has been charged in the case. Harbor player Dion Mills, 19, was charged with one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon for reportedly hitting Pierce assistant coach Pat Swift on the head with an aluminum crutch. Mills is free on $35,000 bail and will be arraigned Oct. 20 in San Pedro Municipal Court.

Mills is believed to be one of the players suspended by Harbor.

Both Pierce and Harbor sent reports of internal investigations to Aviva Kamin, Western State Conference commissioner, who was expected to announce on Thursday what penalties--if any--the two football programs would receive for their part in the brawl.

But Kamin, who had said early Thursday that she had basically arrived at a decision but still needed to check some things, did not announce her ruling as of late Thursday.

Officials at Harbor, including Coach Don Weems, said they would not comment on Kamin’s ruling until it has been finalized.

Marian McWilliams, the athletic director at Pierce, said that Kamin’s ruling, based on internal investigations by both schools and their reports recommending self-sanctions, included some aspects that affected Pierce and to which Coach Bill Norton had objected.

“An official at the game identified a Pierce player who was trash-talking,” McWilliams said. “But that particular player was not in the game. We don’t want to suspend the wrong player. If, in fact, we can identify the person, he’ll be suspended for a game.”

Norton was awaiting a phone call Thursday night from the game official to sort out the issue.

The fracas started near the teams’ locker rooms after the Brahmas defeated the Seahawks, 23-0, in an afternoon game at Harbor.

Swift, an offensive line coach, was knocked unconscious by the blow from the crutch and spent three days at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He was listed in fair condition before being transferred to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs to be near his personal physician.

Norton suffered cuts and bruises, and Pierce running backs coach Phil Wijmer suffered a chest bruise.

No one is sure why the fight broke out, but Norton said trash-talking during the game might have set off tempers.

About 50 law enforcement officers and a police helicopter were called to the scene.
