LA HABRA — It’s the look that counts.
And what Mark Takkinen, Sonora’s coach, saw had to please him in the Raiders’ 34-6 victory against San Dimas (0-4) Friday night at La Habra High.
Except, maybe, the 15 penalties for 153 yards.
“That probably set a new school record,” Takkinen said.
Let the record show that Kevin Rodriguez, a sophomore, started at quarterback.
Takkinen said, “We started the soph, to get a look at him. We’ll look at it for two games and then we’ll make a decision.”
Rodriguez threw for two touchdowns, the first 13 yards to Mark Gonzalez to give Sonora a 7-0 lead.
The score was set up by Adam Chez, who returned the opening kickoff 62 yards.
Chez put Sonora (2-2) ahead 14-0 on a 70-yard run. It climaxed a 99-yard drive in four plays.
Noel Ishikawa scored the Raiders’ next touchdown on a nine-yard run, then Rodriguez and Chez hooked up on a 51-yard strike just before halftime to give Sonora a 27-0 lead.
San Dimas finally scored when Wess Carson ran in from five yards out. Carson paced the Saints with 121 yards in 17 carries.
Cubby Kelly scored scored Sonora’s final touchdown on a 60-yard run. Kelly had 156 yards in nine carries.
