A golfer in a charity match was arrested on a theft charge for allegedly shaving at least 13 strokes from his score to better his chance of winning, police said.

Charles D. Carey was arrested last week after playing in the tournament in Westfield, just north of Indianapolis.

Hamilton County sheriff’s detectives, responding to a tip, followed Carey during his round at Hanging Tree Golf Club. Carey claimed he shot a 67, good enough for second place in the event held to raise funds for the American Diabetes Assn.

“I’d say he shot around an 80, but he put 67 on his golf card,” said Detective Thurl Cecil. The winner shot a 66.

Tournament organizers said they received a tip that Carey had shaved strokes from his scores at previous charity events. For the Hanging Tree tournament, the winner got only a $75 gift certificate after each golfer paid a $75 entry fee. Second prize was a $50 gift certificate.

Carey was in jail Friday in lieu of bail.

The theft charge is punishable by a maximum $10,000 fine and three years in prison.
