BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Oklahoma Cruises Past Iowa State

Dwayne Chandler scored two touchdowns and Cale Gundy became Oklahoma’s career total offense leader as the 10th-ranked Sooners beat Iowa State, 24-7, in a Big Eight Conference opener Saturday at Ames, Iowa.

Chandler’s scoring runs of one and four yards and a 52-yard field goal by Scott Blanton gave Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0) a 17-7 halftime lead. Gundy scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to secure Oklahoma’s 30th victory in the last 32 games with Iowa State.

Rodney Guggenheim scored on a 70-yard touchdown run for Iowa State (1-4, 0-1), which is off to its worst start since losing four of its first five in 1987.

Gundy ran and passed for 224 yards to increase his total to 4,926, breaking the school record of 4,853 set by Jamelle Holieway.

Gundy completed 14 of 23 passes for 190 yards. He had two passes intercepted.

Missouri 10, Southern Methodist 10--Chad Patton of SMU blocked a 47-yard field-goal attempt by Kyle Pooler with 23 seconds left, preserving a tie at Columbia, Mo.

SMU tied it when Erwin Wilburn scored on a 67-yard touchdown pass play from Ramon Flanigan with 12:09 left.

Missouri (1-2-1) has scored only 13 points in three weeks after opening with a 31-3 victory over Illinois. Quarterback Jeff Handy, who completed 18 of 35 passes for 214 yards, had two passes intercepted in the first half, giving him six interceptions in two games.

Kansas 24, Colorado State 6--Asheiki Preston, in his first start at quarterback, directed two second-half touchdown drives to lead the Jayhawks at Lawrence, Kan.

Preston connected with Robert Reed for a 37-yard pass to set up a three-yard run by Charles Henley at the end of the first half as Kansas (2-3) took a 10-0 lead.

Dan Eichloff of Kansas kicked a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter, then added three extra points to tie Terry Miller and Johnny Rodgers for ninth on the Big Eight career scoring list.

Colorado State (1-4) scored with 2:37 left when Erich Prahl scrambled and connected with Eric Olsen on a 42-yard touchdown pass play.

Oklahoma State 27, Texas Christian 22--Freshman Tone’ Jones ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Oklahoma State scored three touchdowns off turnovers at Stillwater, Okla.

Oklahoma State is 3-1 for the first time since 1988.

Texas Christian (1-3) moved the ball well against the nation’s sixth-ranked defense, outgaining the Cowboys, 417-296.

Max Knake of TCU completed 29 of 59 passes for 296 yards.
