Zita Johann; Actress in Horror Classic ‘The Mummy’

Zita Johann, 89, film and stage actress who played opposite Boris Karloff in the 1932 classic film “The Mummy.” Born in Hungary, she moved to the United States with her family as a child and made her acting debut on Broadway in 1924 in “Man and the Masses.” She first appeared in movies in D.W. Griffith’s last film, “The Struggle,” in 1931. She made a handful of other films, ending with “Grand Canary” in 1934. But better roles drew her back to Broadway, where she appeared in such plays as “Machinal,” “Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” “Panic,” “Flight Into China,” “The Burning Deck” and “The Broken Journey.” On Sept. 24 in Nyack, N.Y., of pneumonia.
