Urban Sea Triumphs at Paris

Eric St. Martin took 4-year-old filly Urban Sea, a 25-1 shot, to the lead at the top of the stretch Sunday and held on to prevail over a field of 23 in the 72nd Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s most prestigious horse race, at Longchamp near Paris.

Urban Sea took the lead about a quarter-mile from the finish and edged 78-1 shot White Muzzle by a neck. St. Martin is the son of Yves St. Martin, who won this race four times.

Urban Sea’s winning time for 1 1/2 miles over a soft turf course was 2 minutes 38 seconds. He earned $900,000 from a $1.5-million purse.

Hockey

The Kings essentially made their final roster cuts, assigning seven players to their minor league affiliate in Phoenix and sending forward Kevin Brown back to his junior team, the Detroit Junior Red Wings.

Defensemen Bob Jay, Dominic Lavoie and Brian Chapman and forwards Marc Fortier, Robert Lang, Rob Murphy and Dave Thomlinson were sent to Phoenix.

There are 24 players on the Kings’ roster, including three goaltenders and eight defensemen.

Running

Joan Benoit Samuelson, the 1984 Olympic marathon champion, led the women’s finishers in the half-marathon portion of the Maine Marathon at Portland.

Samuelson covered 13.1 miles in 1:18:22.

Patrick Sullivan of Bangor won the marathon in 2:35:00. Mary Meehan of Topsham was the top women’s finisher in 3:05.58.

Two-time Olympian Ed Eyestone (2:14.34) won the Twin Cities Marathon and Lisa Weidenbach (2:33:38) was the first women’s finisher at St. Paul.

Mexico, led by Juan Salvador (2:19:32) and Emma Cabrera (2:41:12), dominated the first Denver International Marathon.
