PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Montana’s Status to Be Determined
Joe Montana did light stretching Monday and was not limping nearly as badly as he was after Sunday’s game against the Raiders. Montana left in the second quarter because of a hamstring injury. It is not known if he will play in the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against Cincinnati.
“He could be out a week,” Coach Marty Schottenheimer said. “He could be out a month. I just have no idea. . . . I’ll let father time address that and see what unfolds.”
Said Montana: “It’s usually the wide receivers and running backs who get those hamstrings I don’t have a big enough one to pull.”
Montana injured his wrist in the Chiefs’ season opener at Tampa Bay and did not play the next week when the Chiefs lost, 30-0, to Houston.
In Chiefs are 3-0 in games Montana has started. Ken O’Brien, once a star quarterback for the New York Jets, agreed to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, one day after Randall Cunningham broke his leg.
O’Brien will back up Bubby Brister, who replaced Cunningham.
