UP FOR GRABS? With Assemblyman Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove) determined to run for attorney general, local Republicans are salivating at the chance to grab his seat next year. Umberg is the only local Democrat in the state Legislature. His 69th District is heavily Democratic, but has often voted Republican. . . . Says county GOP Executive Director Greg Haskins: “It will be the strongest fight we’ve had in a long time, but we want that seat whether he runs or not.”

STILL SMILING: In Carl Karcher’s battles with his own board of directors, he’s been saying some pretty steamy things about them. But to the board, it’s business, not personal. At least so far they’re still keeping the picture of a smiling Carl Karcher that dons every Carl’s Jr. restaurant. “Why not?” says a young worker at a Carl’s on Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana. “He’s a really nice man.” . . . . His picture hangs next to one of his brother, the late Don Karcher.

FUTURE VISION: You can bet Irvine-based menswear designer Mossimo Giannulli plans to see “Demolition Man,” which opens here today. Not only was the futuristic movie shot partly in Orange County, but those funky glasses that Sylvester Stallone and others in the film wear to add a 21st-Century flavor were designed by Giannulli for its producer, Warner Bros. . . . Says the designer: “I think they’re very contemporary and clean, but I don’t know about futuristic. I guess they appreciate the aesthetic styling.”

BEES’ FRIEND: A less volatile movie opening here today is “Mr. Nanny,” starring former wrestling great Hulk Hogan. If you haven’t seen Hogan’s muscles, they’ll be immortalized in ceremonies today at the Movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park. . . . “He’s a whole ball of wax,” says museum manager Mark Edwards. “It took a whole herd of beeswax to get this guy.” Hogan is 6-foot-6 and weighs 290 pounds. His wax figure shows him in his usual tight yellow trunks.
