PREP ROUNDUP : Nelson Sets Course Record, Helps Canyon Win

Kim Nelson set a course record in helping Canyon to a 23-37 victory over Santa Ana Valley in a Century League girls’ cross-country meet Thursday at Canyon High School.

Nelson ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes 13 seconds, breaking the record of 18:45 she set in 1991. She had strong competition from Santa Ana Valley’s Ellie Estrada, who was second at 18:25.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 17, Sunny Hills 38--Crossing the finish line almost five minutes ahead of the pack, Carrie Garritson took first in 17:59 for Buena Park (1-1). Teammate Marnel Barjas was second in 22:16 on the three-mile course.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 15, Western 50--Kelly Daucher of Brea-Olinda won the 3.1-mile race in 20:52 at Craig Park.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 17, Estancia 42--Heather McGlone won the three-mile race in 19:01 for host Laguna Hills, which has won 22 consecutive dual meets. Laguna Hills is 3-0 and Estancia falls to 2-1.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Katella 15, Esperanza 44--Edgar Benitez won the three-mile race at Yorba Regional Park in 15:46 for Katella (3-0), the top-ranked team in Orange County.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 26, Capistrano Valley 32--With strong running by brothers Arlo (16:30) and Fernando Ayala (16:45), San Clemente edged out Capistrano Valley on a three-mile course at San Clemente. Alberto Sanchez finished first in 16:05 for the Tritons.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

El Modena 17, Santa Ana Valley 1--Brandi Freudenberg swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 36-0 for the season for host El Modena (9-0, 4-0), the fifth-ranked team in Orange County.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 15, Costa Mesa 3--Kate Minajeva, a junior exchange student from Russia, swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for Laguna Hills (4-8, 1-2).

Laguna Beach 18, Century 0--Host Laguna Beach (10-3, 3-0) won every set, 6-0.

In the Sunset League:

Rosary 9, Marina 9 (Rosary wins on games, 77-58)--Colleen Coady won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 and Cheryl Hamilton won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for Rosary (6-1 in league). Marina is 5-2.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:

Laguna Hills 3, Costa Mesa 0--Amy Steele had 15 kills and Misty Thompson added 16 assists and four aces to lead visiting Laguna Hills (6-2, 2-0), which won 15-1, 15-7, 15-11.

In the Sea View league:

Newport Harbor 3, University 0--Misty May had seven kills in Newport Harbor’s 15-8, 15-13, 15-8 victory. Ayesha Attoh had 13 kills and seven service aces for University. Newport Harbor, the top-ranked team in the county, is 6-0 in league. University is 4-2.
