Serra High guard Rick Price, one of the nation’s most sought-after prep basketball players, has chosen to attend Duke University, The Times has learned.

Price made his decision known Thursday, according to a source who requested anonymity. The 6-foot-6 senior had narrowed his choices to Duke and Kansas. He cannot sign a letter of intent until the early period of Nov. 10-17.

Price’s father, also named Rick, would neither confirm nor deny the report. He said an official announcement will be made Wednesday at a news conference at Serra.

“I believe he made the decision two or three days ago,” the elder Price said. “He’s been sleeping on it until he felt comfortable.”

Price, who was contacted by more than 250 colleges, increased his stock with college coaches last summer by playing well at several all-star camps.

A varsity starter since his freshman year, Price averaged 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists last season at Long Beach St. Anthony. He transferred to Serra this fall after becoming disenchanted with the coaching turnover at St. Anthony, which has had five coaches in three years.
