Visions of Fantasy

“Spectacular Spectacles” is the humble title of a show opening today at l.a. Eyeworks’ South Coast Plaza store in Costa Mesa. The 100 fabulous frames from the ‘40, ‘50s and ‘60s on exhibit are part of a priceless collection 20 times that size belonging to Gai Gherardi and Barbara McReynolds, founders of the hip eye wear label. The Huntington Beach natives started their collection with a pair they picked up at the Orange Circle in 1968, followed years later with a second pair found at a Costa Mesa flea market. “They’re just remarkable,” McReynolds says. “You could see the (frame) artists had no boundaries. They truly had their own vision.”

Tiny Gems

Studs are in, but not of the muscle-bound variety. The new waif sensibility and minimalist approach to fashion means simpler, smaller jewelry . . . especially earrings. “Women want a more subtle look,” notes Elizabeth Freitas, jewelry buyer for Nordstrom stores. The Victorian and romantic trends of late have brought on a slew of what Freitas calls “museum-inspired earrings.” They feature garnets and freshwater pearls and use antiquated metals.

Tired of carrying all her oddly shaped toiletries in her arms to the gym shower, Pamela Feller created a tiny tote she calls a “smart and simple alternative to the mess.” Of water-resistant nylon mesh, the Shower Bag (about $12) can hold shampoo, soap, a razor and more in its three compartments. “You just throw it over your shoulder and take it to the beach, camping or leave it hanging in your shower at home,” says the San Diego resident. A first-time item for Feller, she has blown out 2,500 units throughout O.C. and San Diego counties since launching it in July.

A pooch with fashion sense? Organizers of the Top Dog fashion extravaganza are expecting a litter of dogs with style on Oct. 30 at Newport Dunes Resort in Newport Beach. Contestants are being sought to compete in such illustrious categories as best formal and casual wear, lingerie/pajamas, swimwear and Halloween costume. Owners can get into the act with best master-pet matching outfits. Wonder how it’ll go when, with dog-themed music blasting, the “models” have to prowl down the catwalk?
