Results of games involving teams in this week’s Orange County Sportswriters Assn. poll:

1. Los Alamitos (5-0) beat Long Beach Millikan (1-4), 41-0, Thursday.

2. Fountain Valley (5-0) beat Servite (1-4), 28-0.

3. Huntington Beach (5-0) beat Santa Ana (0-5), 58-14.

4. Irvine (4-1) beat Tustin (3-2), 28-17.

5. Esperanza (3-2) lost to Long Beach Poly (4-1), 10-3.

6. Mater Dei (4-1) beat Ramona (3-2), 21-6, Thursday.

7. Newport Harbor (5-0) beat University (0-5), 13-10.

8. Santa Margarita (4-1) lost to Corona del Mar (3-2), 14-7.

9. Capistrano Valley (3-2) has a bye.

10. Valencia (4-1) beat La Mirada (4-1), 23-6, Thursday.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Century League kicks off with its premier running backs, Santa Ana Valley’s Dwayne Cherrington and Villa Park’s Grant Pearsall, going head-to-head Thursday at El Modena High School.

The Pacific Coast League’s title could be decided by the outcome of Laguna Hills at Trabuco Hills Friday night.

A fierce rivalry highlights Sea View League play as fourth-ranked Irvine and Woodbridge meet Friday. Woodbridge’s outstanding defense will try to shut down quarterback Mike Phelps and running back Tony Mathis.

Second-ranked Fountain Valley should get a stern test in the Sunset League from Marina on Friday night before its showdown against third-ranked Huntington Beach in two weeks.

TOP PERFORMERS

Huntington Beach’s Levi Schuck completed 10 of 20 passes for 241 yards, Carlos Rodriguez caught six passes for 123 yards, and halfback Eric Escobedo gained 147 yards in 14 carries to pace the Oilers past Santa Ana, 58-14, in a Sunset League game. Santa Ana quarterback Mark Fausto was 15 of 28 for 246 yards.

Jaret Wright rushed for 200 yards in 10 carries to help Katella tie Western, 29-29. Western quarterback Brandon Brennan passed for 159 yards and a touchdown, completing 15 of 21 attempts.

Sonje Berg was 14 of 23 for 238 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort, as La Habra fell to Savanna, 47-19. Paul Waldrop hit on 10 of 12 passes for 160 yards, connecting with Mike Hynes nine times for 148 yards and three touchdowns for the Rebels.

Adam Hoover completed 11 of 19 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown in Canyon’s 30-3 victory over Estancia.

Laguna Beach’s Pat Wood completed 13 of 24 pass attempts for 186 yards and gained 102 yards rushing to lead the Artists to a 21-14 victory over Coronado.

Quarterback Scott Bertoni completed his first nine passes in Fountain Valley’s Sunset League game against Servite, then he misfired on his next five passes. But Bertoni finished 14 of 22 for 173 yards and a touchdown in a 28-0 victory.

LATE HEROICS

Quarterback Aaron Perlmutter scored from four yards out with 1:25 left, then completed a two-point conversion pass to Lindsay Johnson to give Corona del Mar a 14-7 victory over No. 8 Santa Margarita. Corona del Mar’s J.R. Walz gained 111 yards in 25 carries.

THE SILVER SCREEN

Whittier Christian’s 19-0 loss to Malibu Kilpatrick was filmed by Columbia Pictures. The game footage is to be used in an upcoming movie titled “Gridiron Game.” The movie, according to head Coach Glenn Bell, tells the story of how the Mustang football program develops championship people out of the students of Kilpatrick--a maximum security probation hall.

ON DEFENSE

Irvine held Tustin to two first downs and 50 total yards for the first 22 minutes of the second half, helping the Vaqueros rally from a three-point halftime deficit to post a 28-17 victory. Chris Austin intercepted two passes to lead Irvine’s defense, which had three interceptions and four sacks.

ON THE RECORD

“He’s a marked man because he is such an outstanding football player.”

--George Pascoe, Huntington Beach coach, on tight end Tony Gonzalez, who was ejected after being flagged for a personal foul with 2:37 left in the first half. Gonzalez caught four passes for 82 yards and score twice against Santa Ana.

COSTLY INJURY

Esperanza lost fullback Tom Joyner for the season with a knee injury, Coach Gary Meek said after the Aztecs’ 10-3 loss to Long Beach Poly. Joyner was injured after making an 11-yard reception in the second quarter. He is the team’s leading scorer with six touchdowns.

ON THE MOVE

Juan Rodriguez of Estancia was a busy player late in the first half of the Eagles’ 30-3 loss to Canyon. On successive plays, Rodriguez kicked a 37-yard field goal, kicked off into the end zone and intercepted a pass. He was preparing for a 55-yard field goal on the next play, but time ran out in the half.
