Texas A&M;’s Greg Hill returned from a five-game suspension Saturday to find his tailback position crowded.

Rodney Thomas rushed for 82 yards in 21 carries and scored on runs of nine yards and one yard and Leeland McElroy had an 81-yard touchdown run, leading the No. 14 Aggies to a 34-10 victory over Houston in a Southwest Conference game at College Station, Tex.

Hill joined in for 128 yards in 20 carries, with much of his yardage coming in the fourth quarter.

The Aggies rushed 313 yards as a team and Hill was just pleased to be on the field again.

“It’s unbelievable,” Hill said. “It was like the first night I dreamed about playing college football. I was worried about what I could do. It turned out to be all right.”

Hill missed the 1993 Cotton Bowl and the first four games this season as punishment for accepting pay for work he did not perform on a summer job.

His first carry late in the first quarter was a nine-yard gain. He had 51 yards at the half and returned in the fourth quarter and finished the game.

“There’s no jealousy or envy of one another,” Hill said. “We just want to go out there and win it for the team. We’ve got three guys trying to get in there at one time.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Texas A&M;, 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SWC, scored 20 consecutive points in the second.

Houston fell to 1-4, 1-1.

Baylor 31, Southern Methodist 12--John Henry, Bradford Lewis and Brandell Jackson each rushed for more than 100 yards as the Bears stayed on the ground to win at Dallas.

Baylor (4-2, 2-1) didn’t attempt a pass, the first time a Division I-A team went without a pass since Oklahoma against Colorado on Nov. 15, 1986.

Baylor had 91 rushes, breaking the conference record of 90 set by Texas against Arkansas in 1970. Henry had 164 yards and a touchdown, Lewis 101 and a touchdown and Jackson 100 yards. Robert Strait had 38 yards and two touchdowns.

Baylor, which had been averaging 19 passes and 186 passing yards a game, was forced to the all-rushing attack when quarterback J.J. Joe reported after warmups that his shoulder was sore.

By halftime, the Bears had 44 rushes for 248 yards, getting scoring runs of one and seven yards from Strait and a 42-yarder by Henry. Henry’s run was Baylor’s longest of the season--until he went 50 yards in the third quarter.

The Mustangs (1-2-1, 1-1) were lucky to be down only 21-6 at halftime, scoring on two John Stewart field goals, including a wind-aided 55-yard kick that barely cleared the crossbar as the second quarter ended.

Rice 34, Texas Christian 19--Bert Emanuel threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead the Owls (4-2, 1-1) over the TCU (1-4, 0-2) at Houston.

Emanuel’s 69-yard pass play touchdown to Ed Howard with 10 seconds left in the first quarter is the longest touchdown in the SWC this season.

North Carolina State 36, Texas Tech 34--Backup quarterback Terry Harvey threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Goines as time expired to gave the Wolfpack (3-2) a victory over the Red Raiders (1-5) in a nonconference game at Lubbock, Tex.
