Morocco Ends Zambia’s World Cup Hopes

The Zambian soccer team, rebuilt after 18 players were killed in an April 28 plane crash, lost to Morocco, 1-0, Sunday in its final World Cup qualifier at Casablanca and finished one point behind the Moroccans in Africa Group B.

Zambia (2-1-1) was attempting to qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

Morocco (3-1) will go to the World Cup for the third time, joining Cameroon and Nigeria as the continent’s representatives at the 24-team tournament in the United States next summer.

Cameroon qualified for the 1994 tournament with a 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe at Yaounde, Cameroon.

Pro Basketball

Clipper center Stanley Roberts strained his lower back in practice Sunday morning at UC Irvine and sat out Sunday night’s practice. Roberts will be examined today by Tony Daly, team physician. Roberts, who missed two games last season with a strained lower back, doesn’t believe the injury is serious.

Golf

Jeff Maggert capped a 13-hour workday with a 68, beating the field and rapidly approaching darkness for a three-stroke victory in the Walt Disney World-Oldsmobile Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Maggert, had to play 36 holes to finish the tournament on schedule because the tournament was interrupted by rain on Friday and Saturday.

Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland birdied two of the last four holes to hold off late charges by Nick Faldo and Vijay Singh and win the Belgian Open.

Tennis

Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere upset top-seeded Martina Navratilova, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), to win the European Indoor tennis championship at Zurich, Switzerland. Navratilova, the winningest player in history with a 165 victories, has not won the tournament in two attempts.

Jaime Yzaga beat Petr Korda, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7), to win the Australian Indoor championship at Sydney. . . . Arnaud Boetsch upset second-seeded Cedric Pioline 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3, to win an all-French battle for the title in the Toulouse Grand Prix.

Jimmy Connors defeated Johan Kriek, 7-5, 6-4, to win a Champions Tour event at Hilton Head, S.C. Connors has won all three events on the over-35 tour.

High Schools

Stan Thomas, commissioner of the CIF Southern Section the last seven years, has been placed on paid administrative leave at the request of the Southern Section Executive Committee. Dean Crowley, the section’s associate commissioner, is the acting commissioner. Southern Section officials would not comment on the reason for Thomas’ leave.

Miscellany

Pete Weber beat fellow American Brian Voss, 276-227, to win the Japan Cup pro bowling tournament at Tokyo. . . . Montreal police were not prepared for the riot after the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup last June, says a report prepared for the Quebec government.

Brian Hampton, an outfielder for the George Mason University baseball team, was killed when he was thrown from a car after it struck a utility pole in Fairfax, Va. Teammate Donald Anderson, suffered head injuries but was listed in good condition.
