THOUSAND OAKS : Sybert Resigns State Planning Position

Share

State Planning Director Richard Sybert announced Monday he is resigning his post and is expected to soon declare that he will challenge Democratic Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson for the congressional seat representing most of Thousand Oaks.

In a prepared statement, Sybert said effective Oct. 31 he will vacate the post he has held for nearly three years in Gov. Pete Wilson’s office.

An attorney, Sybert has already loaned $310,000 of his own money to a committee exploring his possible candidacy. The 24th Congressional District extends from Thousand Oaks into the San Fernando Valley and Malibu.

A former resident of Pasadena, Sybert is in the process of moving into a townhome in Woodland Hills, where he also plans to set up a law office, said Richard Temple, a member of the congressional exploratory committee.

“Obviously, it’s pretty clear that he is going to run,” Temple said, adding that the official announcement of Sybert’s candidacy “will be any time now.”

At least three other Republicans are considering a 1994 bid to replace Beilenson in Congress. Beilenson is a Woodland Hills resident.
