THOUSAND OAKS : City Agrees to Pay for Crossing Guard

Share

Children on their way to class at Manzanita Elementary School in Thousand Oaks will soon have help crossing a busy intersection after the Thousand Oaks City Council agreed Tuesday to pay for a crossing guard.

The guard, who will be stationed near the Ventura Freeway off-ramp at Rancho Conejo Boulevard, will cost $4,200.

The traffic at the intersection is intense enough to merit a crossing guard under both city and state standards, Director of Public Works John Clement said. By one count, 668 cars drove off the ramp on a morning and 303 in the afternoon.

The same study found 16 children walking across the intersection in the morning and 23 in the afternoon.

Thousand Oaks last month agreed to pick up the tab for two guards at Madrona Elementary School after Ventura County supervisors cut the crossing-guard program in unincorporated areas.

But council members limited the city’s expenditure to $4,200--enough to fund the two Madrona guards for six months.
