SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In honor of injured teammate Jerome Porter, Loyola running back Kadar Hamilton wrote 28 on a towel that dangled from his waist during Friday night’s football game.

Hamilton then went out and scored four touchdowns in a 33-15 Del Rey League win at St. John Bosco.

“We played this game for Jerome Porter,” Hamilton said. “His spirit is always with us on the field.” Porter broke his right leg during Monday’s practice and is out for the season.

Hamilton, who rushed for 201 yards in 19 carries, raced 68 yards to score on Loyola’s opening drive of the second half. It gave the Cubs a comfortable 27-9 lead with 10:01 left in the third quarter.

St. John Bosco attempted a comeback, but on a fourth-down play, receiver Nick Johnson fumbled after catching a pass from quarterback Bob Fierro. Loyola defensive back Brady Mutch recovered on the Cubs’ 28-yard line.

Tight end Joey Cesta scored on a 15-yard screen pass from Bobby Thomason to give Loyola a 6-0 lead, but Mark McDonald’s extra-point try was blocked.

On the ensuing drive, the Braves were aided by pass interference calls on Loyola’s Brian Duff and Robin Miller.

The penalty on Miller put the ball on Loyola’s one-yard line, where Ryan Williams ran untouched into the end zone on the next play to tie the score at 6.

However, Hamilton was the story in the first half.

He scored both of Loyola’s touchdowns in the second quarter, first on a one-yard dive over the top and then on a halfback sweep from one-yard out to end the half.

“All I had to do was read the holes,” Hamilton said.

In the second half, Hamilton had his longest run. He ran up the middle, then cut outside and ran 68 yards for a score with three defenders in pursuit. He also scored on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap a six-play, 61-yard drive.
