FLIGHT FEST: Five months after a plane slammed into the runway at the El Toro Air Show, Southern California’s other big aviation spectacle starts Saturday at Point Mugu (B1). . . . The fatal El Toro crash has not prompted any changes at Point Mugu, spokesman Alan Alpers said. Bleachers will remain 1,500 feet from the runway, in accordance with Navy standards. “We run a very safe show,” Alpers said, citing its 30-year history without a crash. . . . Annual attendance is 200,000.

DON’T SHOOT: U. S. Atty. Gen. Janet Reno wants the networks to curb TV violence (A1), and some Ventura County parents say amen. . . . “They have a responsibility to regulate themselves,” said Karen McLaine of Thousand Oaks. “Kids who watch violence all the time definitely become desensitized.”. . . Karen Boone, a Ventura County Community College District trustee, said sexual innuendo in shows like “Roseanne” is just as dangerous. “It’s value-changing,” she said. . . . Not everyone agrees: “NYPD Blue,” the new ABC drama steeped in sex and violence, was last week’s 11th most-watched show.

TIMELY CROPS: Nobody wants a pumpkin Nov. 1 or a Christmas tree Dec. 26. So for Ventura County farmers, such crops present a considerable risk (Ventura County Life, J21). . . . The payoffs can be considerable too: The county’s poinsettia crop alone was valued at $920,000 last year.

AGENCY OVERLOAD: As if it wasn’t hard enough to keep track of Ventura County’s trash agencies, east county cities are forming another one (B4). The East Ventura County Waste Task Force will try to reduce landfill dumping. . . . That’s supposed to be the job of the newly authorized Ventura County Waste Authority. But some fear that it may never get off the ground. . . . In any case, we’ve still got the Ventura Regional Sanitation District (which runs landfills), the Ventura County Solid Waste Management Department (which deals with state rules) and the County Waste Commission (which advises the other agencies).
