The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Florida Panthers, 4-3, in overtime at Miami and tied an NHL record Thursday night with their eighth consecutive victory to start the season.
The Maple Leafs tied a record set by the 1934-35 Maple Leafs and matched by Buffalo in 1975-76.
Toronto won when Rob Pearson scored his second goal of the game off a rebound 2:17 into overtime. Toronto, which also got goals from Dave Andreychuk and Kent Manderville, will try to break the record Saturday at Tampa Bay.
The New Jersey Devils, who have won their first six, are the only other undefeated team in the NHL this season.
Toronto goaltender Damian Rhodes, making his first start since March of 1991, stopped 26 shots.
Florida’s Andrei Lomakin forced overtime when he brought the puck from behind the net and beat Rhodes with a shot that bounced off the post with 6:44 left in the third period.
Detroit 6, Winnipeg 2--Keith Primeau had two goals and an assist before picking up a game misconduct to lead the Red Wings at Detroit.
Primeau and Winnipeg’s Nelson Emerson were ejected at 4:07 of the third period for joining a fight between Detroit’s Darren McCarty and Kris King of the Jets.
Primeau gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 3:45 with the only goal of the first period, beating Bob Essensa from the deep slot.
Teemu Selanne cut the Detroit lead to 4-2 at 10:01 of the third period, scoring his first goal since an opening-night hat trick.
Detroit’s Steve Yzerman left the game after injuring his neck in the first period. He was hurt in a collision with Winnipeg’s Thomas Steen. The initial diagnosis was a pinched nerve. Yzerman was taken to Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital for precautionary X-rays, but returned to the arena before the game ended.
Dallas 6, Ottawa 5--Brent Gilchrist sparked a four-goal third-period comeback, then scored the game-winning goal 1:56 into the overtime period as the Stars surprised the Senators at Ottawa.
Gilchrist revived the Stars with a screened shot at 10:01 of the third period. Grant Ledyard added another goal 26 seconds later and, by the 13:09 mark, Neal Broten and Mike Craig had tied the score 5-5.
Chicago 3, Quebec 2--Jeremy Roenick’s goal with 56 seconds left at Chicago helped the Blackhawks end a three-game losing streak.
Vancouver 6, Calgary 3--The Flames missed a chance to move past the Kings into first place of the Pacific Division as Trevor Linden and Pavel Bure each scored two goals. Calgary has won four consecutive games and is only two points behind the Kings.
St. Louis 5, San Jose 2--Kevin Miller scored three goals at Sacramento and the Blues broke open a close game with a three-goal third period.
