A four-car pileup on the Ventura Freeway at the Santa Clara River bridge closed all southbound lanes for more than an hour Friday afternoon, snarling traffic for miles, the California Highway Patrol said.

Within minutes after the crash, traffic came to a halt, with the backup extending to the Telephone Road exit. There was no information available on the accident’s cause late Friday, police said.
