A summary of selected City Hall actions this past week affecting Central Los Angeles.

CITY COUNCIL

* UNITED NATIONS DAY: Approved the closure of the parking lane and one traffic lane on the north side of Rodeo Road between Genesee Avenue and the courtyard of the Baha’i Center from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today for the United Nations Day Street Fair. City fees of $412 were waived for the event, sponsored by the Baha’is of Los Angeles.

* PUBLIC SERVICE FUNDS: Approved spending $400 in public service funds from Councilman Mike Hernandez’s district to reimburse the Divine Savior Church for bus service provided to students. The school provides community outreach programs by bringing students from the northeast areas of the city, including Lincoln Heights and Highland Park, for neighborhood cleanups and cultural awareness programs.

* AGING: Approved waiving city permit fees, including event insurance, for the city Department of Aging’s 10th anniversary celebration and open house from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday. The celebration will be in the department’s newly leased building at 2404 Wilshire Blvd., near MacArthur Park. The department is an advocate for senior citizen issues. Meals and transportation are also provided for senior citizens.

* THANKSGIVING: Approved the closure of a portion of several streets near Downtown, including 5th Street between San Pedro and Sanford streets, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 25 for the Fred Jordan Mission’s Thanksgiving Day Meals Program. Meals will be provided for the homeless.

HOW THEY VOTED

How South-Central and Eastside City Council representatives voted on selected issues.

* DOMESTIC PARTNERS: Approved a proposal by Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg urging the state Public Employees Retirement System to grant health insurance coverage to the unmarried partners of public employees. Goldberg is working on legislation to give health insurance and other benefits to the partners of unmarried city employees. Passed: 10-0. Voting yes: Richard Alatorre, Hernandez, Goldberg, Rudy Svorinich Jr. and Rita Walters. Absent: Nate Holden and Mark Ridley-Thomas.

* IMMIGRATION: Approved a proposal directing the city’s chief legislative analyst and the city attorney to study the local effects of new immigration measures recently signed into law by Gov. Pete Wilson. The laws are aimed at discouraging illegal immigration. One of the bills would prohibit driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants; another requires proof of legal residency for participation in state-funded job training programs. Passed: 12-0. Voting yes: Alatorre, Hernandez, Goldberg, Svorinich and Walters. Absent: Holden and Ridley-Thomas.
