IBM Hands Ad Account to Small Agency: Hoping to bolster its tattered image through highly unusual advertising, the New York-based computer giant selected the 6-month-old agency Merkley Newman Harty to handle its estimated $50-million U.S. advertising business for its personal computer division. The account was formerly handled by the New York agency Lintas Worldwide. The decision by International Business Machines Corp. was a blow to Venice-based Chiat/Day, which made a strong bid for the account on the basis of its experience creating ads for former client Apple Computer Inc.
