ORANGE : Vote on Firefighter Pact Expected Today

Share

The City Council is expected to vote on a controversial two-year, $21.2-million contract with city firefighters at 3 p.m. today.

If approved, the agreement would effectively sink efforts of a local group that is pressuring the city to contract with the county for fire services--a move the group says could save the cash-strapped city $2 million per year.

City officials say the proposed agreement with firefighters will save the city $1.8 million over the next two years. Under the terms of the agreement, firefighters agreed to restrictions on overtime pay and no increases in base salary until June, 1995.

The council postponed voting on the contract agreement at a night meeting on Oct. 12, disappointing some 200 residents who turned out expecting a decision.

The council explained that it delayed the vote because it needed more information about the logistics of contracting for fire services.
