From Associated Press

Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy foiled the New Jersey Devils’ bid to become the fourth NHL team to start the season with an 8-0 record by stopping 41 shots to lead the Canadiens to a 2-0 victory Tuesday at East Rutherford, N.J.

New Jersey had the better of the scoring chances, but Roy, the most valuable player in Montreal’s Stanley Cup victory last season, stopped them all in giving the Canadiens their fourth consecutive victory.

Blown opportunities caught up with New Jersey as Benoit Brunet and Paul Dipietro capitalized on Devil giveaways in the second and third periods to give Roy the support he needed.

Philadelphia 4, Quebec 2--Eric Lindros capped a three-goal second period as the Flyers won at Quebec.

Josef Beranek scored his league-leading 10th goal and assisted on another as the Flyers won for the seventh time in nine games.

Chicago 9, St. Louis 2--Jeremy Roenick, Kevin Todd and Joe Murphy each scored twice, and Ed Belfour stopped 24 shots as the Blackhawks won at Chicago.

It was a pay back of sorts as it was St. Louis goalie Curtis Joseph who stopped the Blackhawks in four consecutive games in last year’s opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Winnipeg 5, Florida 2--Nelson Emerson and Keith Tkachuk scored first-period shorthanded goals to lead the Jets at Miami.

Alexei Zhamnov, Luciano Borsato and Teemu Selanne also scored for the Jets. Brian Skrudland had both goals for Florida.
