STUDIO CITY : Group to Seek Limits on Helicopter Traffic

Share

Convinced that San Fernando Valley skies are anything but friendly, a group called “Stop The Noise!” announced plans Wednesday to launch a petition drive to limit helicopter traffic at Van Nuys Airport.

The group, composed of a number of Valley home and property owner organizations, is expected to launch the drive at a meeting tonight in Studio City.

“Between the media and joy ride flights and the Burbank airport, it’s getting noisier by the day in Studio City,” said Tony Lucente, president of the Studio City Residents Assn. “We are going to educate people on the steps that can be taken to make their opposition known.”

Lucente said the petition, which asks that media and entertainment flights be banned and others rerouted, will be presented to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Airports. Slated to speak at the meeting is “Stop The Noise!” President Gerald Silver, who drew the ire of aviation officials and chopper pilots earlier this month by proposing changes in their routes.

Silver said he has conducted a computer analysis of traffic and determined who is causing the most noise.

“What we are going to do is let people know who is creating their helicopter heartburn,” Silver said. “They may be surprised to find out who it is.”
